Shooting through a blurred foreground gives a portrait depth — like you're glimpsing a private moment rather than being handed a posed one. It's a technique from my fashion and editorial work, and it only takes seconds when you know what you're looking for. The bride didn't have to do anything here except be ready. That's the point. The best bridal portraits don't ask much of the bride at all. Ross Priory's rooms have lovely light and plenty of layers to frame through, so images like this come naturally. A little bit of craft, quietly applied, and the morning carries on undisturbed.

A dram before the ceremony — a wee Scottish tradition that settles the nerves and makes a great photograph. I love the men's side of a wedding morning. There's usually a bit of nervous energy about, and a toast like this is when it breaks into grins. I shot this from outside the circle rather than asking them to face me, so it stays a real moment between pals. The grounds at Ross Priory give the groom's party plenty of space to gather away from the main house. Glasses up, one big cheer, and down to business.

The flower girls leading the way down the outdoor aisle, sunshine on the carpet, one wee one being carried the whole distance. Processions are full of tiny stories — the nerves, the waves to grandparents, the small hand gripping a bouquet — and I photograph every member of the party on their walk, not just the bride. An outdoor ceremony at Ross Priory means gorgeous natural light for all of it, no dim aisle or mixed indoor lighting to fight. If children are part of your procession, relax about how they'll behave. Whatever they do ends up being everyone's favourite picture.

The look on her face during the vows says everything. I photograph ceremonies on a long lens from a respectful distance, so I can get frames this close without ever standing beside the celebrant or blocking a guest's view. Nobody wants a photographer looming during their vows — but you'll absolutely want the expressions from those minutes, because you won't remember them clearly yourself. The day moves too fast. That's really my whole job in one sentence: to hold on to the moments your own memory will blur. This one, I'd say, was worth holding on to.

That lace train deserved a photograph all of its own. Spread out in the window light, every bit of the detail shows — the pattern, the length, the work that went into it. I always give the dress this moment before the day sweeps everyone along, because it's the one chance to record it perfectly. The windows at Ross Priory look out towards the loch, which gives beautiful soft light for exactly this kind of frame. If you've fallen in love with the back of your dress, and most brides have, make sure your photographer plans for it. I always do.

Five men, matching kilts, walking like they mean it. Walking shots work for groups exactly as they do for couples — the movement takes the stiffness away and lets the outfits show properly. Full Highland dress looks superb at Ross Priory, with the tree-lined paths and the old stone behind. Get you in the perfect lighting conditions. My only direction here was "walk towards me and have a chat", and the rest happened on its own. If your groom's party has made the effort with their outfits, and Scottish groomsmen usually have, they deserve a frame with this much swagger in it. It takes one minute. They'll thank you for it.

The bridesmaids making their entrance, pink against the old stone. I position myself for the procession the way I do for the bride's walk — low enough to keep the guests in frame, close enough to catch faces. Each bridesmaid gets her own moment on the aisle, because these women have usually carried half the wedding planning on their shoulders and they deserve better than being background. September gave this day soft, generous light, which the pink dresses loved. If your ceremony is outdoors at Ross Priory, your whole procession gets photographed in the best light Scotland offers.

This is why couples choose Ross Priory. Marrying with Loch Lomond and the hills behind you is about as good as a Scottish backdrop gets — and it's under an hour from Glasgow, which still surprises people. When I photograph a lochside ceremony I think about the whole frame: the couple, the celebrant, the flowers, and that view doing its quiet work behind everything. Weather on the loch changes fast, so I always have a plan for every version of the day. On this one, Scotland behaved itself beautifully. Some ceremonies you photograph. This one, you just try to keep up with.

The littlest member of the wedding party, getting a cuddle before the ceremony. Babies and toddlers at weddings do exactly what they like, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I never try to make wee ones perform for the camera — I just stay close, stay patient, and catch the genuine moments as they come. Frames like this matter more with every passing year, because children grow so fast that the wedding album becomes a time capsule. If your day includes tiny guests, tell me who they are. I'll make sure they're woven through your gallery, tantrums and all.

Last buttons, final checks. A groom getting into full Highland dress is a small ceremony in itself, and I photograph it that way — the tweed, the sporran, the concentration. No posing, no instructions, just being nearby with the camera while it happens. These quiet frames from the morning give a wedding gallery its opening chapter, so when you look back you see the whole day, not just the highlights. Ross Priory's rooms have a warm, calm feel that suits this part of the day well. Get dressed at your own pace. I'll take care of remembering it.

The walk every dad rehearses in his head for months. An outdoor aisle at Ross Priory is a special way to do it — open sky, guests either side, and the loch waiting at the end. I photograph this from the front, moving backwards ahead of them, so I get the bride, her dad, and the faces of the guests reacting as they pass. It's seconds long and completely unrepeatable, so I leave nothing to chance. I've photographed this venue's outdoor setup before, and knowing exactly where the light falls on that carpet makes all the difference.

The first kiss, with the loch looking on. Half the guests reach for their phones at this exact second, and that's fine by me — I'm already in position, and I planned my angle before the ceremony began. That's the difference a professional makes at the big beats of the day. There's no scrambling, no hoping. I know where the kiss happens, where the light is, and where I need to stand so the loch stays in the frame behind you. Your guests' phone pictures are lovely keepsakes. This one's the one that goes on the wall.

This summer wedding gave me everything the venue promises.
Here's something I learned shooting here: some of the best natural-light couple portraits at Ross Priory happen at the back of the building. The light falls beautifully there, and it's a short step from the celebrations — no long walk, no lost time with your guests. Knowing where the light lives at a venue is half the job, and it's the half most people never see.
I covered the day from the morning of the bride's preparations right through the celebrations — documentary style, staying close and quiet, catching what was real. Then a relaxed portrait session making the most of that Loch Lomond backdrop. Summer at the loch gives long evenings and soft light, and we used them.
Loch Lomond is comfortably within my patch — I'm based in Troon and photograph weddings across the loch, Glasgow, Ayrshire and all of Scotland.
