Rainy Glasgow wedding portrait Partick — Cottiers

Rain on the day is never the disaster couples fear it'll be — sometimes it hands you your best photograph. This couple wanted portraits out in Partick in Glasgow's West End, and rather than hide from the weather we leaned into it, a clear umbrella and those beautiful sandstone tenements doing all the work.

I used a touch of off-camera flash here to lift the couple off the wet street and make them pop against the grey, while keeping the mood of the day honest. The kilt, the dress, the rain-slicked road — it's unmistakably Glasgow.

Being ready to make the most of whatever a day throws at you is a big part of what I do; a fresh eye and a bit of nerve turns rain into something memorable. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and the West End streets around it gave us a backdrop like no other.

Three generations caught in one big laugh on the dance floor — two friends and a mum, arms around each other, completely lost in the moment. This is the kind of frame I'm always hoping for at a reception: nobody posing, nobody aware of the camera, just pure joy between people who love each other.

Shot in the coloured party lighting at Cottiers in Glasgow, I worked in close and used the available light to keep it feeling real and full of atmosphere. The warmth on their faces is entirely their own.

Catching these unguarded connections is the heart of documentary wedding photography — you can't stage a laugh like this one. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and its lively evening atmosphere gave me moments like this all night long.

The finishing touches to the bride's hair at home, that quiet window of calm before the day really begins. I love photographing getting-ready moments like this — there's an anticipation in the air, and the soft morning light through the window does something no other light can.

I framed this through the foreground, using a bridesmaid's hair to lead the eye across to the bride catching the light, keeping it natural and unposed. Details like the flowers and the gentle expression tell the story of the morning without a word.

These early hours set the tone for everything that follows, before the couple made their way through to Cottiers in Glasgow for the celebration. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and following the day from its quiet beginning gave the whole story a natural arc.

It's easy to walk past the guest book on a wedding day — everyone's focused on the ceremony, the speeches, the first dance. But this little corner is one of my favourite things to photograph. A leather-bound book, a couple of wooden Scrabble tiles spelling out "GUEST BOOK," a pen laid out ready, and candlelight doing all the work in terms of mood. It's a quiet detail, but it's the one guests will actually write in — the messages, the well wishes, the in-jokes only they'll understand. That's a keepsake in itself.

This was shot at Cottiers in Glasgow's West End, a genuinely special wedding venue and one of my favourites to work in. It's a converted Victorian church — built in 1865 as Dowanhill Parish Church — with the stained glass, stonework and atmosphere still fully intact. Candlelight against that kind of backdrop gives everything a warm, golden tone that's hard to recreate anywhere else.

For a detail shot like this, I let the candle do the lighting rather than adding anything artificial. Getting in close, keeping the depth of field shallow, and letting the light fall off naturally into the background is what gives it that soft, intimate feel — the same warmth you'd want the whole day to carry, just distilled into a single small moment.

Detail shots like this matter more than people often expect. They're not the images that go up on the wall, usually, but they're often the ones that bring a couple straight back to how the day actually felt — the smell of candle wax, the low chatter of the room, all the people who came to be there for them. That's really the whole point of documentary-style wedding photography: catching the things that would otherwise just be forgotten.

Cottiers is a venue I'd recommend to anyone looking for something with real character in Glasgow — architecturally stunning, full of atmosphere, and endlessly photogenic. As a wedding photographer working across Glasgow and Scotland, days here are always a pleasure.

If you're getting married at Cottiers or anywhere in Glasgow, I'd love to hear from you.

The morning before the ceremony, at the bride's home in Troon — two bridesmaids in matching blue robes, hair and make-up done, a quiet toast before the day properly begins. There's a stillness to these moments that I love photographing: the nerves and the excitement sitting side by side, everyone just being themselves before the pace picks up.

This was shot in soft window light in the morning, the kind that wraps around faces gently and needs nothing added to it. I kept back and let the two of them share the moment, catching the glance and the ease between them rather than posing it.

Getting-ready photographs like this set the tone for the whole wedding story — the calm before Cottiers in Glasgow, where the celebration would carry on. Cottiers was another venue I photographed for the first time, bringing a fresh eye to a day that already had its own natural warmth.

The groom on his feet in full Highland kilt, speech cards in hand, and his parents cracking up beside him. This is the reaction I'm always watching for during speeches — not the person speaking, but the faces of the people who love them.

Shot in the soft uplighting at Cottiers in Glasgow, I stayed back with a longer lens so the family could forget I was there and just enjoy the moment. That's where the honest expressions live — in the laughter nobody's performing for the camera.

Capturing the connection between a couple and their families is at the centre of how I photograph a wedding. Cottiers was another first-time venue for me, and its warm stone and dramatic light gave these candid moments a backdrop that did half the work for me.

The cake cutting at Cottiers in Glasgow — a beautiful naked sponge dressed with berries and thistles, the groom in his grey tweed and tartan, the two of them sharing a quiet smile over it. After the noise of the speeches, this was a lovely still moment between them.

I lit this simply to keep the couple clean and warm against the dark of the hall, and framed it to let the cake and the Highland dress tell the Scottish story of the day. It's a small, traditional moment, but one couples always want captured properly.

Photographing the details and set-pieces of a day with as much care as the candid moments is part of complete wedding coverage. Cottiers was a first-time venue for me, and bringing a fresh perspective to it is exactly how I like to work.

A proper giggle between two bridesmaids during the morning, both still in their blue robes, hair up and ready. This is my favourite kind of getting-ready photograph — nothing arranged, just the two of them caught mid-laugh at something only they'd find funny. Moments like this are where a wedding day really starts to breathe.

It was shot in the natural morning light at the bride's home in Troon, with the window behind them keeping everything soft and true to life. I stayed out of the way and let the moment run, which is usually when the best expressions come — you can't pose a laugh like that.

These early hours set the mood for the whole day ahead, before everyone made their way through to Cottiers in Glasgow for the celebration. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and coming in with fresh eyes let me follow the day's energy exactly as it unfolded.

Toast to the bride - Cottiers Glasgow wedding

Glasses up all along the top table for a toast to the bride — and the bride herself creased with laughter in the middle of it. Moments like this happen in a heartbeat, and they're gone just as fast, so it's all about anticipating them rather than asking for them.

I photographed this from the end of the table at Cottiers in Glasgow, letting the raised arms frame her, working with the available light so nothing felt staged or lit for effect. The joy in her face is exactly why I shoot the way I do.

Following the natural flow of a day — and being ready when the best split-seconds arrive — is what documentary wedding photography is really about. Cottiers was a venue I shot for the first time, and its atmosphere made these unguarded moments sing.

Cottiers Glasgow wedding speech under fairy lights

A speech in full swing under the canopy of fairy lights at Cottiers in Glasgow, the whole room turned toward the top table. This is one of my favourite views of the venue — the old stained glass and stonework lit in blues and reds, guests packed in close, everyone caught mid-reaction.

I shot this from within the room rather than the front, low and wide, so you get the scale of the hall and the warmth of the crowd all at once. Available light only — Cottiers gives you so much atmosphere to work with that flash would only flatten it.

Reception moments like this are the heartbeat of the documentary coverage I do: no setup, no direction, just the day as it happened. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and coming in with fresh eyes let me find angles that made the most of its extraordinary interior.

A guest spinning his friend under his arm on the dance floor, both mid-laugh, the party in full swing behind them. Evening receptions at a Scottish wedding have an energy all their own - kilts flying, everyone up dancing - and this frame catches that feeling in a single moment.

Shot in the theatre lighting at Cottiers in Glasgow, I moved with the dancing and worked with the coloured light spilling across the floor rather than fighting it. A little timing is everything with pictures like this - a half-second later and the moment's gone.

Capturing the fun and movement of the evening is just as important to me as the quiet moments earlier in the day; it's all part of telling the full story. Cottiers was a venue I photographed for the first time, and its atmosphere made the dance floor a joy to shoot.

Cottiers Glasgow

Cottiers Wedding Photography — Partick, Glasgow

Cottiers in Partick is one of Glasgow's most distinctive wedding venues, a stunning Victorian church conversion with soaring ceilings, original stained glass, and a warmth that fills every corner of the building. It's the kind of place that feels special the moment you walk through the door.

Callum and Hayley's wedding day brought typically Scottish weather, it rained. But honestly, Cottiers is one of those rare venues where the rain almost works in your favour. The light that filters through those church windows on a grey Glasgow day is soft, even, and flattering, perfect for natural portraits with and without flash. And with a venue this characterful, you never need to go outside to find something beautiful to photograph.

I came to this wedding through a photographer friend who made the introduction, one of those bookings where you feel immediately comfortable with the couple before the day even arrives. Callum and Hayley had done an engagement shoot with me beforehand around some of their favourite spots in Glasgow, which made a real difference. By the time the wedding day came, there were no nerves, no awkwardness, just two people enjoying their day while I quietly captured it.The little in-between moments are always my favourite to photograph, the laughter between the formal bits, the family gathering in the aisles, the quiet look between two people who have just got married. Cottiers gave us plenty of those.

"Derek was absolutely amazing."

We couldn't have asked for a better photographer. At our first meeting Derek put both of us at complete ease and this continued all the way through to the wedding. He is so enthusiastic and has so many great ideas. The pictures from our wedding look incredible and have captured the day perfectly."

If you're planning a wedding at Cottiers and looking for a photographer, I'd love to hear from you. I'm based in Ayrshire but photograph regularly across Glasgow and the west of Scotland.
