A bird flew into a wall. I picked it up and it was out cold.
The bride took it off me and held it in her hands until it came round. A minute later it lifted off and away. That was the whole thing — a small bird, a stunned pause, then off it went. One of those moments you could not plan and would not think to ask for.
The focus went to the bird because the bird is the story. Her face soft behind it, her laugh wide open, the ring catching light. Shooting wide open kept the background clean, so the veil and the green beyond fall away and leave the bird sharp.
I knew this family before the wedding. Her dad owns the Spes Bona out of Troon — good hope, in Latin. I have been out fishing with him. So walking into Roodlea Barn as the wedding photographer, with his daughter getting married, meant a bit more than a normal booking.
This was also my first time working at Roodlea Barn. That is usually a good thing. A venue you have never shot before makes you look properly rather than repeating what worked last time.
As an Ayrshire wedding photographer I cover barn venues, castles, hotels and coastline across the county. Roodlea Barn sits in open countryside just outside Ayr. Wildlife turning up is more common than you would think. Usually it is a swallow through the rafters. Occasionally it is this.

A full rainbow over the house, and the two of them standing beneath it. You cannot plan this. What you can do is work with a photographer who's watching the sky all day and will pull you out of the drinks reception the second something like this appears. That's exactly what happened here — a two-minute interruption for a once-in-a-lifetime frame. Galloway weather changes fast, and that's not a flaw, it's an opportunity. A boat passed during the vows. Focus went to it, and the couple went soft.
That is a documentary decision, not an accident. The sailboat is the story — a small reminder that the world carried on while these two made their promises. Sharp on the couple, it is one more vow photo. Sharp on the boat, it becomes a picture about place and time.
The sun was low and hitting the water hard. All that silver texture across the sea would have been noise in colour. In black and white it reads as light, and the silhouettes sit cleanly on top of it.
The Irish Sea sits right below the ceremony spot at Dunskey Estate. A long lens and a bit of patience is all this needed.

Applause on both sides. Her father in full Highland dress, kilt and sporran, holding it together better than most.
Shot from the front, head on, standing where the celebrant would be. It is the only angle that gives you both their faces and the reaction behind them. Guests clapping, a few already laughing, one or two watching her rather than the camera.
The stone wall and the timber at the back tell you this is a barn without needing a wide shot to prove it. Roodlea Barn has good light coming in from the side, which is what keeps the faces in the rows behind from going flat.
Black and white takes out the noise. A room this full has a dozen competing colours in it — dresses, jackets, flowers, that pink blazer on the right. Strip it back and all that is left is expression.
The bouquet is held low on purpose. Held high, it covers the dress and half her face. Small thing, big difference.

This was taken during a styled shoot at Lochgreen House Hotel in Troon. Not a real wedding — a planned creative session with a team of Ayrshire suppliers, organised so we could all build new work.
I shot this one from directly above. The chequered floor at Lochgreen is a strong graphic surface, and most photographers work with it at eye level. From overhead it becomes something else entirely. The black and white squares turn into a grid, and the dress spreads across it like ink in water.
The practical side matters here. I was up high, calling directions down, while the model arranged the tulle by hand. Getting a skirt of that volume to fan evenly takes a few goes. You lay it, look, adjust, look again. The version that works is usually the fourth or fifth attempt, not the first.
Lighting was the harder problem. Overhead angles kill your options — you can't put a light behind the subject without it appearing in frame, and you can't put it in front without it landing in your own shadow. I lit from the side, low and close, which is why the floor falls away into darkness at the edges and the dress holds all the brightness.
This is exactly why styled shoots earn their place. On a wedding day I would never ask a bride to lie down on a hotel floor for fifteen minutes while I climbed above her. There's no time and it's not the job. But practising the shot here means that if a moment ever presents itself naturally — a bride sitting on a staircase, a dress laid out on a bed — I already know how to light it and how long it takes.
Lochgreen House Hotel sits just outside Troon, ten minutes from my base and part of the RAD Hotel Group in 2026. The house is Edwardian, with heavy panelling and formal gardens, and it holds both intimate and larger weddings. The interiors are darker than people expect, which suits a documentary approach — you're not fighting flat, even light all day.
The dress came from Dream Brides in Irvine, one of Kirsty's favourite photograph. Jillian is seconds away from walking into the Memorial Chapel at the University of Glasgow to get married. Her bridesmaid is passing her flowers. Another is fixing her veil. And Jillian herself is completely in the moment — composed, present, and utterly unaware of the camera.

Ten minutes away from the guests, out on the grass above the cove.
He went for the dip. She laughed. The dress did the rest — that train ran nearly two metres and the wind was low enough to let it settle.
The cliffs at Dunskey Estate give you height, water and green in one frame. The bracken and the rocks stop it feeling like a generic sea view. You could not shoot this anywhere else.
Colour stays on this one. The navy suit against the white dress against that grass is the whole reason the picture works. Strip it back to black and white and it flattens into every other coastal portrait.
The walk out to this spot takes a couple of minutes from the house. Worth building into the timeline if you are getting married here.

The light was already starting to soften by the time we stepped outside at Roodlea Barn, that low golden hour glow settling over the Ayrshire countryside. There's a red vintage sports car parked outside the barn — the kind of detail that photographs beautifully on its own, but paired with a couple who are completely wrapped up in each other, it becomes something more. That's exactly what happened here.
I used off-camera flash for this shot, balancing it against the natural light as the sun dropped lower behind them. It's a technique I lean on a lot at golden hour — it lets me keep the warmth and depth in the sky while making sure the couple themselves are lit properly, rather than turning into silhouettes. The result is that rich, almost cinematic tone, with the couple properly separated from the background instead of blending into it.
Roodlea Barn itself is a fantastic Ayrshire wedding venue — rustic without trying too hard, with plenty of character in the stonework and timber, and an outdoor space that gives real flexibility for portraits like this one. As a wedding photographer working across Ayrshire and Scotland, it's exactly the kind of venue I love arriving at: interesting textures, good natural light, and enough space to actually direct a couple without it feeling forced.
That's the part that mattered most in this image though — not the car, not the light, but the two of them. She's leaning into him, a glass of champagne in hand, and there's this quiet, unguarded closeness between them. My documentary and editorial background means I'm always watching for moments like this rather than manufacturing them. I gave them a loose direction — stand here, lean in, relax — and then let them do the rest. That's the whole approach really: enough guidance that the couple knows what to do, but not so much that it feels staged. The best wedding photos rarely look posed, even when they are.
I get a lot of camera-shy couples who worry about how they'll come across in photos, and moments like this are usually what changes their mind. Once they stop thinking about the camera and start thinking about each other, everything relaxes — the shoulders drop, the smile softens, and you get images that actually look like them rather than a performance of them.

This image was taken late in the evening in the iconic cloisters of the University of Glasgow — and it almost didn't happen.
By the end of a full wedding day, energy is high, light is gone, and getting a couple away from their guests for portraits takes a little persuasion. But Jillian and Reece trusted the process — and when Reece saw this image on the back of the camera, he turned to me and simply said: "That's the money shot."

I always find that Scotland has some of the most breath taking locations for weddings. Scotland has some stunning locations for photography such as Skye, Ayrshire, Perthshire and many more that would be dream wedding locations and help some clients get the best photographs for their wedding day. I have worked on some projects and connected with wedding venues such as Kelburn Castle located on the Ayrshire coast line which this lovely couple chose for their wedding.
Here you will find what I saw on the day. All these red leaves on the ground this was the perfect place to get some amazing photography shots. But the lighting was poor with the sun coming from a different direction. Being mostly a master at natural light photography. I knew that bringing an off camera flash and exposing for the natural light first would make this lovely couple pop just like 4k photograph.

This beautiful couple portrait was taken at the stunning ruins of Dunure Castle on the Ayrshire coast. After their registry office ceremony, we had planned to visit Culzean Castle for photographs — but the haar rolled in from the sea and had other ideas. Sometimes the best moments come from the unexpected. We made our way to Dunure Castle instead and found something truly magical — dramatic coastal ruins, moody atmospheric light, and a couple completely at ease with each other on the rocks. This is one of my favourite candid wedding photographs, and it happened during dinner.
The bride's family brought a tradition with them from their home country. When the guests stomp their feet, the couple have to do something. Stand on a table. Hide underneath one. Kiss in the funniest way they can think of. The guests decide when, and the couple just have to go with it.
The stomping started while I was halfway through my meal. I put my fork down, grabbed my camera, and got low. Seconds later, the bride and groom were under the table, laughing, and I had the shot.
That's the thing about candid wedding photography. The best moments don't wait for you. You have to be watching, even at dinner.
Piersland House Hotel is a beautiful wedding venue in Troon, right on the Ayrshire coast. It's a few minutes from the beach, which gives couples the best of both worlds. Warm, characterful rooms inside. Sea, sand and big skies outside.
This wedding was a wet one. Proper Scottish rain. But that's exactly why I plan the way I do. Before the day, I'd walked the beach in the wind and rain, picked out my spots, and even checked the tide times. When a break in the weather came, we were out the door and on the sand within minutes. The couple got their beach photographs, and we even caught their confetti shot later in the day when the rain eased.
Weather never has to ruin a wedding. It just needs a photographer with a plan.

I shot this from low down, under the tablecloth, so you feel like you're in the moment with them. Black and white strips everything back to what matters — the laugh, the kiss, the two of them in their own wee world while the whole room cheers above.

The ceremony sits right on the cliff edge. Chairs face the water. Nothing between the couple and the horizon but sky.
This one is shot wide on purpose. Tight on the couple, you lose the thing that makes Dunskey Estate what it is — the drop, the open sea, the weight of the cloud sitting over it. Pull back and the whole scene reads at once. Guests, flowers, coastline, everything.
The light that afternoon was flat and even. No harsh shadows on faces, no squinting. That kind of soft cover is a gift at an outdoor ceremony. It holds detail in the sky and still keeps the faces in the front rows.
Black and white was the obvious call. Colour would have pulled attention to the flowers and the tartan. In monochrome the eye goes where it should — the couple, small in the frame, held by everything around them.

This brilliantly joyful image was captured at Mabie House Hotel in Dumfries — my first time shooting at this beautiful venue and what a way to experience it for the first time. The bride incorporated a traditional German wedding custom into her day, and combined with the confetti shot this created one of the most energetic and celebratory moments I have ever photographed. Getting the timing and lighting right for a shot like this takes real preparation — making sure every guest is perfectly lit, the confetti is at its peak and the couple are completely in the moment. The result is pure joy captured in a single frame. Mabie House Hotel is a stunning wedding venue in Dumfries and Galloway and I would love to shoot there again.

Some couples just stay with you, and this pair are two of them. He's Scottish, she's Polish, and the joy between them was written across the whole day — helped, it must be said, by sunshine that turned up right on cue and lit the famous blue gates of Ibrox like they'd been painted for the occasion.
Stopping at Ibrox Stadium for photographs is a proper Glasgow wedding tradition, and I can see why couples love it. The historic Rangers gates, with their bold ironwork and that unmistakable lettering, give a wedding photograph real sense of place and personality. For a groom who follows the club, a frame here means as much as any grand venue portrait — it ties the biggest day of his life to a place he's loved for decades.

Just the bride, her mum, and me. Everyone else was still downstairs.
She had asked for it that way. Not because she disliked being photographed, but because she had paid for a photographer and did not want the moment shared out among a dozen phones. Her view was simple — if this is happening once, let it happen properly.
I think she was right. A room with three people in it behaves differently from a room with ten. Nobody is waiting on you. Nobody is angling for their own version of the shot.
This comes up more than people expect. Guests and suppliers mean no harm — they lift a phone because they are enjoying themselves.
But the moment gets diluted. Attention splits. The bride ends up looking at four lenses instead of none, and the frame you were about to make turns into everyone's frame at once.
A short window with the door shut fixes it. Ten minutes is enough. Her mum was there the whole time, which is the part she wanted anyway.
Bounced flash, not natural light alone. On-camera, angled off the ceiling and the wall behind me so it comes back soft and wraps round her face.
Direct flash is what you see far too often in getting-ready photos. Hard shadow on the wall, shine on the forehead, the skin drained flat. Point the light at the room first and the room does the work.
Bounced properly, the lace holds its detail, the veil keeps its texture, and the room stays visible behind her — the mirror, the painting, the bay windows.
If you are choosing between photographers, ask how they handle flash indoors. It sounds technical. It is really a question about whether your getting-ready photos are ones you keep.
The bridal suite at Blairquhan Castle has bay windows on two sides and enough floor to lay a dress like this out properly. As a listed recommended supplier there, I know which rooms work and how long you need in each. Half an hour upstairs is usually plenty.

Fairfield House, set just back from Ayr's seafront, has bright, airy prep rooms that lend themselves to clean, editorial portraits like this one. The mirror gave a natural way to show the bride twice over — the real and the reflected — adding depth and a fashion-led quality to a fleeting, private moment.
The high-key treatment, all soft whites and gentle contrast, keeps the mood light and elegant and draws the eye straight to her. Black and white removes any distraction from the surroundings, leaving only the bride, her reflection and the feeling of the moment.
This was my first time photographing at Fairfield House, and as with every new venue, that fresh perspective sharpened how I looked for compositions like this — turning an everyday mirror into the setting for one of the day's most beautiful, in-between moments.

Megan, an American who has completed all of Scotland's Munros, chose Glen Etive as the perfect backdrop for her elopement portraits — a place that truly reflects her love of Scotland's wild landscape.
Shot in full Highland sun with no shade, this image presented one of the technical challenges I love most — working with harsh, uncontrolled natural light to create something soft and timeless. Megan's lace-back mermaid gown by Brides in the City, Glasgow, flows beautifully against the glen's green hillsides, with the Buachaille Etive Mor ridge forming a natural frame in the distance.
This session was a gift — a way of celebrating not just their wedding but their shared love of the Scottish outdoors. It's exactly the kind of photography I love most: adventurous, personal, and rooted in a real connection to place.

The weather had other plans for us that day — the rain meant outdoor portraits weren't possible, so I set up a studio style lighting arrangement using the gorgeous fairy light backdrop inside the venue instead. The result speaks for itself. Sometimes the best photographs come from adapting to the moment rather than fighting it. Enterkine House is one of Ayrshire's most elegant wedding venues and its beautiful interiors make it perfect for creative indoor portraits like this one. The couple were absolutely brilliant to work with and this is one of my favourite portraits from the day.

An intimate, editorial couple portrait at Trump Turnberry on the Ayrshire coast — the pair drawn close against a crisp white wall, the sea and coastline stretching out behind them. Trump Turnberry sits right on the Firth of Clyde, with sweeping views toward Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. That coastal light and those open horizons make it one of Ayrshire's most distinctive settings for photography — dramatic without needing much beyond what the location already gives you.

Mid-story, mid-laugh, gardens all around — the drinks reception in full voice. I photograph guests the way I photograph couples: candidly, warmly, and without ever asking anyone to perform. Over a drinks hour I'll quietly gather frames of nearly everyone at the wedding, which means the couple's gallery holds their whole community, not just themselves. Veil airborne, arms up, the party hitting its stride. A question every bride quietly asks: keep the veil on for the dancing or take it off? My answer from behind the camera — keep it for the first few songs. A veil in motion is one of the most dramatic things a dance floor photograph can hold, as this frame demonstrates, and you can hand it to your maid of honour once the ceilidh gets dangerous. The starlit floor at Brig o' Doon lights dancers from below, which makes flying fabric glow. Physics, fabric and a good tune. Magic.

Not every shoot is a real wedding day — this one was a styled bridal portrait session, with a model stepping in front of the camera for the first time. The nerves she walked in with didn't last long. What you see here is the result: a soft, downward gaze over a hand-tied bouquet of pale pink roses and eucalyptus, caught in gentle, natural light.
I worked with natural light rather than flash for this one, positioning her so the light fell softly across her face and shoulders while catching just enough sparkle on the beaded bodice of the dress without overpowering the shot. A big part of a shoot like this is guiding someone into a pose that flatters both the light and the dress, without it ever feeling stiff — a little direction on where to stand and how to hold the bouquet, then stepping back and letting her relax into it properly.
That's really the whole job when you're working with someone modelling for the first time: take the pressure off, keep the atmosphere relaxed, and let the professionalism do the reassuring rather than the instructions. Her mum put it far better than I could when she left this review afterwards:

The classic close portrait — heads together, bouquet up, both at ease. Every gallery needs a handful of timeless frames like this alongside the candid work, because these are the ones grandparents want printed and framed. A helpful note on bouquets for portraits: hold it at hip height, stems down, and it flatters both the flowers and your posture; held too high, it hides the dress and stiffens the arms. I quietly fix bouquet height a dozen times at every wedding — it's the smallest adjustment with the biggest payoff. Two seconds of direction, one frame for the mantelpiece. Done.

This portrait of Fheirn was taken at her mum's house, just before she left to get married. I typically have time with the bride before the day begins — time to create portraits, work the light, get something special. On this occasion I had almost none. So I worked with what was there. Available light. A staircase. A bride about to walk into the biggest moment of her life. With just a little direction I managed to get these portraits before her father arrived — and the moment he walked through that door, I put the camera down and just watched. What happened next was pure documentary. He hadn't seen his daughter yet. I was completely unaware it was coming. I just stayed ready — and caught every moment as it unfolded naturally between a father and his daughter, minutes before she got married. It's worth saying — Fheirn's father was the person who recommended me as their wedding photographer. That trust means everything, and moments like this are exactly why I take that responsibility seriously. Nobody announced him. He just walked in, and she stopped.
Her son, in a kilt, coming to see his mum before the ceremony. She had him in her arms before she had finished turning round. Eyes shut, one hand flat on his back, the room going quiet behind her.
Watch the bridesmaids. One hand over the mouth. One caught mid-breath. Her mum on the right, seeing it happen and not saying anything. Five people reacting at once, all differently, all real.
This is not a photograph you can set up. It relies entirely on being in the room, already positioned, with the camera up before anything happens.
That means arriving early, working quietly, and not asking anyone to do things. If I had been busy arranging a group shot when that door opened, I would have missed it. The morning is full of small moments like this one and most of them last four or five seconds.
It also means reading a room. When someone new walks in, I turn to the person they are walking towards, not to the door.
Off-camera flash, aimed deliberately.
The room had big windows on the left and warm ceiling light above, and left alone that combination causes trouble — daylight is cool, hotel bulbs are warm, and skin ends up two different colours in the same frame.
So the flash went off the camera and got pointed where I wanted the attention. Not fired at the room. Placed so it falls on her and on him, and drops off before it reaches the back wall. That is why she separates from everyone behind her. Six people in the frame, and your eye goes straight to the two on the left.
It is a small thing that makes a big difference in a busy room. Light the moment, not the space.
This was my first wedding at the venue. I was there because the bride's dad is a photographer himself and put my name forward, which is about the best recommendation there is.
Walking into a building you have never worked in sharpens you up. You look at rooms properly. You find the light rather than assuming you know where it is. Most of my award-winning frames have come from venues I was seeing for the first time.
The venue
The Busby Hotel sits in Busby on the south side of Glasgow, part of the Manorview group. Getting-ready rooms are bright and big enough to hold a full bridal party without anyone standing in a doorway, which is not something every hotel manages.

This joyful image was captured at Redhurst Hotel in Giffnock, on the south side of Glasgow — a fantastic wedding venue known for its warm atmosphere and elegant surroundings. The bridesmaids' first look reaction says it all — pure excitement and happiness as they see each other ready for the big day. These candid, in-between moments during the wedding morning are some of my favourites to capture, full of genuine emotion and laughter. The main staircase at Lochgreen House Hotel, photographed during a styled shoot in Troon. This was a creative session with a team of Ayrshire suppliers rather than a wedding day, but the staircase is one I'd use on a real wedding without hesitation.
Two things make it work. The oak beams overhead pull the eye upward and give the frame a natural ceiling. And the width of the stair means a full skirt can spread across three or four steps without hitting the banisters. Very few Ayrshire venues give you that.
I shot from the bottom, low, which does two jobs at once. It lets the dress fill the lower third of the frame, and it puts the arched beams into the top of the picture rather than cropping them off. Standing at normal height, you lose the roofline completely and the shot flattens out.
The lighting is mostly the house's own. There's a lamp on the landing behind her and a window off to the left, and I let both do the work rather than overpowering them with flash. That's why the wood reads warm and the whites stay soft. Kill the ambient light with a big strobe and you get a technically clean photo of a completely different room.
The posing point is worth spelling out, because it's what I spend most of my time on with real couples. She isn't holding a pose here — she's mid-descent, weight shifting, hands settling. I asked for movement rather than a position. Camera-shy people freeze when you tell them where to put their hands. Give them something to do instead and the body sorts itself out. Walking down a staircase is one of the most reliable versions of that.
For couples looking at Lochgreen as a venue: this staircase is your wet-weather backup as well as a portrait spot. Ayrshire weather does what it does, and knowing there's a strong indoor option that isn't just a hotel corridor takes real pressure off the day. I'd usually use it after the ceremony, before the meal, when there's a natural twenty-minute gap.
Lochgreen House Hotel is on Monktonhill Road, a few minutes from Troon town centre and Royal Troon golf course. It's part of the RAD Hotel Group, alongside Brig o' Doon, Radstone, Seamill Hydro, Lochside and Fairfield.

Her dress is still moving. His hand is up, hers is up, and the whole room is watching.
The chandelier is the reason this frame works. Shot low and wide, it sits directly above them and pulls the eye down through the crystal to the two of them on the floor. Any tighter and you lose it. Any higher and the room stops feeling like a room.
Blairquhan Castle gives you a proper ballroom — damask walls, portraits, cornicing, and that one light hanging in the middle of it. It is a rare thing in Ayrshire. Most reception spaces need help. This one just needs a photographer who steps back far enough.
Dark rooms like this are where off-camera flash earns its keep. Bounced, not fired straight on, so the ceiling detail holds and the guests along both walls stay visible. Faces on the left, faces on the right, a baby on someone's knee at the edge of the frame. The reaction is half the picture.
Black and white was the right call. The dress, the tartan, the wallpaper and a dozen different outfits were pulling in every direction. Strip the colour and you are left with movement and expression.
I am a listed recommended supplier at Blairquhan Castle, so I know the building well — where the light falls, which rooms hold up after dark, and how long the walk is between them. That matters more than it sounds when the timeline gets tight.

The sun had already gone. This light is mine.
That warm edge running through her hair and down his shirt is off-camera flash, placed low and behind them, gelled and dialled down to match what was left in the sky. Nothing about it was luck. The real light was dying and the honest options were to pack up or make something.
I would rather make something. Knowing how to build a sunset after the sun has gone is the difference between getting the shot and telling a couple we ran out of time.
The reflection does the rest. Their real selves on the right, the glass version on the left, slightly darker and a beat out of step. Two frames in one. It only works from one position, so it is always worth walking around a car before deciding there is nothing there.
Colour stays on this one. The warmth against that cool blue sky is the whole reason it holds together. In black and white it collapses into any other couple portrait.
The practical point for couples: a short gap in the timeline after dinner is worth protecting. Ten minutes outside is enough. And if the light has gone by then, that is not a problem — it just changes how I work.
Kilt, black tie, and an Ayrshire sky. Not a bad combination.

The groom wanted a photo with his dad and his groomsmen, cigars going. That was the brief and it was a good one.
What actually happened was better than what was asked for. Somebody leaned in with a lighter, somebody else laughed, his dad held his cigar up at the edge of the frame, and for about four seconds nobody was thinking about the camera at all. That is the picture. Not the tidy version they had in mind.
This is a harder frame than it looks. Men in dark suits, in a dark timber room, standing at six different distances from the light.
Straight flash would have blown out the two nearest the camera and left the rest in shadow. Instead I used a continuous light source — a Jerry Ghionis Ice Light, held off to one side — so the light falls across the group rather than at it. Everyone stays readable, and because it is continuous rather than flash, nobody flinched or reset their expression.
Black and white finishes it. Dark suits, wood walls and a dozen skin tones under warm indoor light do not sit well together in colour. Take the colour out and all that is left is expression, which is all this picture needed.
This was my first wedding at the venue, and I think that shows in a good way. Somewhere you have never worked makes you look properly. You are not repeating a shot list from last time. You are reading the room.
Most of the frames I have won awards for came from venues I was walking into for the first time.
Silverwood Resort sits at Errol, between Perth and Dundee, with an events barn and lodges on site. It is not local to me, and that is fine. I photograph weddings across Scotland and travel is built into how I work.

This was shot on natural light alone, no flash or reflector. The day's soft, even light suited a black and white edit, which strips away any distraction from the surroundings and keeps the focus where it belongs — on the two of them and the quiet connection between them. For a moment this gentle, monochrome feels more honest than colour ever would.
It was a privilege to photograph this wedding — the daughter of a work colleague — and to spend the day among such a warm, welcoming family. The atmosphere was relaxed and full of good feeling from start to finish, which always shows in the photographs.

It sits above the city like it has always been waiting for this exact moment, and when a couple steps out in front of it, the whole backdrop seems to lean in. The ceremony itself took place up at the top of the castle, and afterwards we came down into the grounds to capture these portraits before heading off for the wedding meal — the bride and groom framed against centuries of Scottish stone, with their wedding car catching the soft grey light of an April afternoon.

This was my first wedding at Redhurst Hotel, and its light-filled bridal suite made these early hours a pleasure to photograph. A relaxed, unhurried approach lets couples and their closest people simply be together, which is exactly where the honest, in-between photographs come from.

There's a stillness to this moment that I always try to capture — the bride caught quietly with her bouquet, head bowed slightly, just before the noise of the day properly begins. It looks completely unguarded, but there was a small amount of direction behind it. I gave her a gentle prompt — something to focus on, a moment to just breathe — and let her reaction happen naturally from there. That's really the skill in bridal portraits: giving someone just enough direction that they relax into it, without it ever looking posed.
This was shot at The Marine Hotel in Troon, one of Ayrshire's most recognisable wedding venues, sitting right on the coast with views out over the Firth of Clyde towards Arran. It's a venue I return to often, and one of the things I love about it is the quality of light in the upstairs rooms — big windows, soft curtains, and that lovely, changeable Ayrshire coastal light.
For this shot, I worked entirely with the natural window light coming through the curtains. Positioning her side-on to the window let the light wrap around her veil and pick out the beading on her dress, while everything else in the room stayed soft in the background. With the light doing most of the work, all I needed to do was guide her into it and give her something genuine to react to — in this case, simply looking down at her bouquet in a quiet moment before the ceremony.
That's my approach with every bride, especially ones who feel a little camera-shy in the run-up to the day. A touch of direction, then space to just be themselves. The best portraits come from that balance — enough guidance that someone knows what to do with their hands and where to stand, but not so much that the moment stops feeling real. My background across fashion, editorial and headshot work is really what makes that possible; it's the same skill, just applied quietly.
The Marine Hotel Troon is a venue I know well, and that familiarity helps on the day — knowing which rooms catch the best light at which time, and where a couple can steal five quiet minutes away from the schedule.
