Outdoor Bridal Portrait — Scottish Countryside

Scotland gives you backdrops most photographers can only dream of, and this outdoor bridal portrait makes the most of them — the bride against a wall of dark Scottish pines, her veil lifting in the wind, her bouquet of white roses and thistles held close. I was second shooting for a friend, Lyall Gallagher. Helping out and taking photos of the behind the scenes and creating content using different tools at hand.

Outdoor portraits in Scotland come with a challenge: the light and the weather do what they want. This is where my technical grounding earns its keep. Rather than fight a flat, grey sky, I shape the light so the bride stands out cleanly against the trees, keeping the mood dramatic without losing detail in her dress or her face. A little off-camera flash, exposed for the natural light first — and the whole frame comes alive.

I love a portrait that shows where you are. A bride could be photographed against a plain wall anywhere in the world; a frame like this could only be Scotland. That sense of place is what makes these images worth hanging on a wall.

Planning a wedding somewhere with a view — Ayrshire, the Highlands, anywhere the Scottish landscape does the talking? Get in touch. Making the most of a dramatic setting is one of my favourite parts of the job.
