Scottish Wedding Photography Trends for 2026 — What I'm Seeing Right Now

Planning a wedding in Scotland in 2026? Here's an honest look at what couples are actually choosing right now, based on what I'm seeing across Ayrshire and beyond. Not trends for trend's sake — just what's genuinely changing and why it matters for your photos.

Couples Are Keeping It Smaller

One of the biggest shifts I've noticed is that couples are moving away from large guest lists and going for something more personal — usually somewhere between 30 and 80 people. And honestly, it makes a huge difference to the photographs.

When there's less pressure to manage a big crowd, couples are just present. They're relaxed, they're laughing, they're actually enjoying their day — and that's exactly where the best images come from. You can't fake that kind of atmosphere.

More Real Moments

This is something couples are asking for more and more — and it's something I've always built into the way I work. People want images that actually look and feel like their wedding day. The glance across the room, the laugh that nobody planned, the quiet moment between just the two of you.

That said, posed shots absolutely have their place — and when they're done well, they don't look posed at all. A lot of it comes down to how relaxed you feel in front of the camera, and that's something we work on together. The couples I photograph find that the more we work together through the day, the more natural everything feels — and that shows in the images.

My approach is a blend of both. I'm always watching and capturing what's genuinely happening, but I'll also guide you into situations and positions that bring the best out of you — without it ever feeling stiff or forced. The goal is always images that feel like you, not images that look like everyone else's wedding.

Scotland's Weather Is Part of It — Not a Problem

I'll be straight with you — some of my favourite photos have been taken in the rain. The mist coming across a loch, dramatic skies over the Ayrshire coast, that golden light after a summer shower. These are the things that make Scottish wedding photography unlike anywhere else in the world.

If you're getting married here — whether that's at Blairquhan Castle, Marine Troon, Enterkine House, Piersland House, or somewhere up in the Highlands — build some flexibility into your day. Don't be terrified of the weather. More often than not, it gives you something you couldn't have planned.

Elopements

An intimate couple portrait — just the two of them, wide landscape, small figures in big scenery.

If you have anything from Glencoe or a Highland setting, perfect here.
