The flower arch, a kiss, and a sky threatening drama behind them — I'll take that combination every time. Dark clouds make colours sing; the sunflowers on the arch and the tartan of his kilt glow against all that grey. Technically this means balancing my light against a moody sky, which is bread and butter when you've learned flash properly. On a bright blue afternoon in Dumfries.A red carpet rolled out across the grass, chairs filling up, and the Galloway greenery all around. Outdoor ceremonies at Mabie House are a proper treat — the gardens sit right on the edge of Mabie Forest, so your aisle comes with a wall of trees behind it. I photograph the scene wide like this before things begin, because the setting your guests walked into is part of the memory. A wedding dress with a denim jacket over it — and honestly, it was brilliant. I love when couples dress like themselves instead of like a catalogue, because personality is what makes photographs interesting. Here she's sorting his buttonhole under the trees, a tiny domestic moment in the middle of the big day, and the jacket makes the frame hers alone. My advice to every couple: wear what feels right, plan what feels right, and don't let tradition boss you around. Your photographs should look like the two of you.
