Wedding Cake — Piersland House, Troon Wedding

A beautiful tiered cake finished with tartan ribbon, from Sugar and Spice Troon, standing ready at Piersland House. Detail shots like this are easy to rush past, but couples put real thought into them and they deserve a proper photograph.

I photograph the cake with clean light and a simple background so it reads clearly, with a nod to the setting around it. The tartan ribbon here ties it beautifully to a Scottish wedding — a small touch that says exactly whose day this is.

Piersland House in Troon is a lovely setting for these details. Planning your wedding here? Get in touch and tell me about your day.

Cutting the Cake — Piersland House, Troon

Cutting the Cake — Piersland House, Troon

Lauren and Gareth cutting their tartan-ribboned cake at Piersland House in Troon, the gardens visible through the windows behind them. The cake cut is a lovely, simple moment, and the light through Piersland's windows makes it an easy one to photograph well.

I keep moments like this relaxed — no long posing, just the couple enjoying it while I catch it. Get the couple in the best lighting or I will bring my own if the background is good but bad lighting on them. Getting married at Piersland House in Troon? Bridal Makeup — Piersland House Wedding Morning

Bridal Makeup — Piersland House Wedding Morning

The wedding morning at Piersland House in Troon — Lauren in the makeup chair, the room busy around her, the day still ahead of everyone. Morning coverage sets the whole tone of a wedding gallery, and it's some of my favourite work.

My approach in the bridal suite is to stay quiet and let the morning unfold. Makeup, hair, the bridesmaids drifting in and out, the nerves and the laughter — I catch it all without directing any of it. The best getting-ready photographs come from a photographer who blends into the room. That said, I'll quietly move someone into better light when it helps them shine — documentary doesn't mean standing back and hoping.

Piersland's bridal preparation space has lovely soft light for this. If you're planning your wedding morning here, get in touch — the early hours are always worth photographing.

Father of the Bride — Piersland House, Troon

Father of the Bride — Piersland House, Troon

Lauren's dad seeing her in her dress for the first time at Piersland House in Troon. This is a moment I always position myself for carefully — it happens once, it lasts seconds, and there's no asking anyone to do it again.

I stay back for these, using a wider lens but sometimes a longer lens so the moment stays entirely between the two of them. What you see here is exactly what happened, unposed and unbroken.

My advice to any bride planning her morning: give your dad a proper first look in a quiet room, just the two of you. It makes one of the most treasured photographs of the whole day. Getting married at Piersland House in Troon? Get in touch.

The Wedding Dress — Piersland House, Troon

The Wedding Dress — Piersland House, Troon

Lauren's dress trailing the length of Piersland House's staircase, the train laid out across the patterned carpet. Some of the loveliest frames of a wedding morning are the ones that show the details couples spent months choosing.

I photographed this from above to let the dress tell its own story — the lace, the length, the way it falls. It takes a moment of arranging and an eye for the light, and it gives a gallery a quiet, elegant beat between the busier moments.

Piersland House in Troon has beautiful features like this staircase that lend themselves to photographs. Planning your wedding here? Get in touch.

Ceremony Moments — Piersland House, Troon

Ceremony Moments — Piersland House, Troon

Half the emotion of a wedding happens in the seats, and this frame from Lauren and Gareth's Piersland House ceremony proves it — guests caught up entirely in the moment, colour and feeling everywhere.

During a ceremony most photographers watch only the couple. I split my attention, because the faces of the people who love them tell the story of what the day actually means. A long lens and a quiet foot, and you catch it without anyone noticing.

Piersland House in Troon keeps a ceremony intimate enough that no one's emotion gets lost. Planning your wedding here? Get in touch — this is how I photograph every day.

First Kiss — Piersland House Wedding, Troon

First Kiss — Piersland House Wedding, Troon

Husband and wife — Lauren and Gareth's first kiss at Piersland House in Troon, framed by the tall windows with the venue's gardens in full colour behind them. The first kiss is the one photograph nobody forgives a photographer for missing, and it's over in about two seconds.

There's no trick to it beyond preparation. I've got my position sorted early, a clean line to the couple, exposure locked, and my full attention on the celebrant's words so I know exactly when it's coming. Then a short burst, and hope they linger — these two did.

What makes this frame for me is the light. Piersland's windows flood the room with soft daylight and open onto those beautiful gardens, so the whole scene glows without a flash anywhere near it. Confetti at Piersland House — Troon Wedding

Confetti at Piersland House — Troon Wedding

Confetti flying, guests cheering, Lauren and Gareth walking through the middle of it at Piersland House in Troon. A good confetti moment is pure joy on camera, and there's a wee bit of planning behind every one — the right spot, the right light, and plenty of confetti in plenty of hands.

I position myself so the couple come towards me with the confetti catching the light and the guests framing them on both sides. It's over in seconds, so anticipation is everything.

Troon Beach Wedding Portraits — Piersland House

Troon Beach Wedding Portraits — Piersland House

One of the great advantages of a Piersland House wedding in Troon: the coast is right there. Lauren and Gareth stepped out to the dunes and the beach for a few portraits, the marram grass and the Ayrshire coastline giving something completely different from the venue gardens.

I live in Troon, so this stretch of coast is my back garden — I know where the light lands and how long we can slip away without the couple missing their party. A few minutes here gives a gallery real variety: the grand venue, then the wild open coast.

Getting married at Piersland House in Troon and fancy some beach portraits? Ask me — it's one of the best things about marrying on this coast. Get in touch.

bride twirling on the dance floor at Piersland House

bride twirling on the dance floor at Piersland House

The bride mid-spin on the dance floor at Piersland House in Troon, her dress swinging out, caught in black and white. This wasn't the first dance. I'd just come through the door and spotted her having a proper twirl, so I had a split second to change my settings and catch it before the moment was gone.

Evening photography is the technical exam of the wedding day. Low light, fast movement, and no second chances. That's exactly the kind of shooting my training was built for, and it's why I can react quickly when something happens without warning.

I kept the couple clean and sharp while letting the room hold its atmosphere. Monochrome felt right here. It strips everything back and puts all the attention on the movement and the joy of the moment.

Nights at Piersland House in Troon have a real energy once the dancing starts. Planning your evening here? Get in touch. I stay for the good bit.

Final Touches — Piersland House Bridal Prep

The finishing touches — Lauren putting on her earrings at the mirror in the bridal suite at Piersland House, her reflection catching the moment. It's the small, quiet frames like this that fill out the story of a wedding morning.

Mirror shots take a bit of care to get right — keeping myself out of the glass while finding the angle that shows both the bride and her reflection. But they're worth the effort, because they add a depth and a stillness that a straight portrait doesn't.

Piersland House in Troon gives these morning moments beautiful natural light. Planning your wedding here? Get in touch — I'm just down the road.

Wedding Child Portrait — Piersland House, Troon

Wedding Child Portrait — Piersland House, Troon

A rare still moment — this wee one had been running about all morning at Piersland House in Troon, and getting a photograph of her was no easy task. I caught her here by the window, quiet for just a second, and took it in black and white to make the most of that soft light.

Children at weddings are some of the hardest subjects to photograph and some of the most rewarding. You can't direct a child who's mid-adventure, and you shouldn't try — chase them with a camera and you get nothing. The trick is patience: stay ready, keep half an eye on them all day, and wait for the split second they stop. That's when you get a frame like this one.

Parents and grandparents nearly always tell me these are among their favourite photographs of the whole day — the wee ones caught being exactly themselves. Piersland House in Troon has lovely natural light for these unplanned moments. Planning a wedding here with little ones in the party? Get in touch — catching them is my favourite challenge.

The Ceremony — Piersland House Wedding, Troon

The Ceremony — Piersland House Wedding, Troon

Lauren and Gareth during their ceremony at Piersland House in Troon, the conservatory filling with soft natural light through the glass. Ceremony coverage is quiet, careful work — I move as little as possible and never intrude on the moment a couple has planned for months.

The light in Piersland's ceremony space means no flash is needed, just the room as everyone in it experienced it. I position myself early so I'm settled and ready for the vows, the rings and the first kiss without any fuss.

Piersland House

Piersland House Wedding Photographer | Ayrshire

There's something about a summer wedding at Piersland House that just works. That distinctive Tudor-style building on the edge of Troon has a warmth to it even before you factor in the weather — timber beams, ivy-covered stone, and gardens that catch beautiful light through the afternoon and into the evening. It's one of my favourite Ayrshire venues to come back to, and Lauren and Gareth's day here was no exception.

Lauren told me beforehand that she didn't think of herself as photogenic — something I hear from a lot of brides, and something I never quite believe once the day actually gets going. That's really the whole job on a wedding day: not making someone look like a different person in front of the camera, just helping them feel comfortable enough that who they actually are comes through. A little direction where it's needed, then stepping back and letting the rest happen naturally.

That came through in the message Lauren left afterwards:

"I can't sing Derek's praises enough after photographing our wedding recently. We had such a fabulous day which Derek has managed to capture so wonderfully. Our preview pictures are really special and we're so excited to see the rest of the shots. I usually describe myself as not photogenic but Derek made me and the rest of the wedding party feel so at ease, which is reflected in the photos. We have received several compliments about Derek from many of our guests all describing how considerate and helpful he was. He has been excellent, providing great communication & support throughout. Genuinely cannot praise his efforts and professionalism enough would not hesitate to highly recommend him for any photo shoot or function. So happy to have had him capture our big day."

That's the part that means the most — not just that the photos turned out well, but that Lauren, Gareth and their guests actually enjoyed having me there. A wedding day moves fast, and my approach is to stay close, watch what's actually happening, and step in with a little guidance only when it's needed — for group shots, portraits, the moments that benefit from a steady hand.

Piersland House lends itself to that really well. Between the building itself and the grounds, there's no shortage of good light and good backdrops throughout the day, whatever the Ayrshire weather decides to do.

As an Ayrshire wedding photographer based just down the road in Troon, Piersland House is a venue I know well and always enjoy returning to. If you're planning a summer wedding here — or anywhere across Ayrshire and Scotland — I'd love to hear from you.
