The sun had already gone. This light is mine.
That warm edge running through her hair and down his shirt is off-camera flash, placed low and behind them, gelled and dialled down to match what was left in the sky. Nothing about it was luck. The real light was dying and the honest options were to pack up or make something.
I would rather make something. Knowing how to build a sunset after the sun has gone is the difference between getting the shot and telling a couple we ran out of time.
The reflection does the rest. Their real selves on the right, the glass version on the left, slightly darker and a beat out of step. Two frames in one. It only works from one position, so it is always worth walking around a car before deciding there is nothing there.
Colour stays on this one. The warmth against that cool blue sky is the whole reason it holds together. In black and white it collapses into any other couple portrait.
The practical point for couples: a short gap in the timeline after dinner is worth protecting. Ten minutes outside is enough. And if the light has gone by then, that is not a problem — it just changes how I work.
Kilt, black tie, and an Ayrshire sky. Not a bad combination.
