Troon Beach is a five-minute walk from the door of the Marine, and when the sun drops over the water towards Arran, you get skies like this. Very few venues in Scotland hand you a beach at sunset as part of the deal. I live here, so I know the tide times and exactly where the light falls at different points in the year — no guesswork on the night. A tartan shawl keeps the cold off and looks brilliant. Ten minutes on the sand, then back to the party.
