He came through the door

Nobody announced him. He just walked in, and she stopped.

Her son, in a kilt, coming to see his mum before the ceremony. She had him in her arms before she had finished turning round. Eyes shut, one hand flat on his back, the room going quiet behind her.

Watch the bridesmaids. One hand over the mouth. One caught mid-breath. Her mum on the right, seeing it happen and not saying anything. Five people reacting at once, all differently, all real.

Why I stay out of the way in the morning

This is not a photograph you can set up. It relies entirely on being in the room, already positioned, with the camera up before anything happens.

That means arriving early, working quietly, and not asking anyone to do things. If I had been busy arranging a group shot when that door opened, I would have missed it. The morning is full of small moments like this one and most of them last four or five seconds.

It also means reading a room. When someone new walks in, I turn to the person they are walking towards, not to the door.

The light

The room had big windows on the left and warm ceiling light above, and left alone that combination causes trouble — daylight is cool, hotel bulbs are warm, and skin ends up two different colours in the same frame.

So the flash went off the camera and got pointed where I wanted the attention. Not fired at the room. Placed so it falls on her and on him, and drops off before it reaches the back wall. That is why she separates from everyone behind her. Six people in the frame, and your eye goes straight to the two on the left.

It is a small thing that makes a big difference in a busy room. Light the moment, not the space.

First time at the Busby Hotel

This was my first wedding at the venue. I was there because the bride's dad is a photographer himself and put my name forward, which is about the best recommendation there is.

Walking into a building you have never worked in sharpens you up. You look at rooms properly. You find the light rather than assuming you know where it is. Most of my award-winning frames have come from venues I was seeing for the first time.

The venue

The Busby Hotel sits in Busby on the south side of Glasgow, part of the Manorview group. Getting-ready rooms are bright and big enough to hold a full bridal party without anyone standing in a doorway, which is not something every hotel manages.
